Product Abstract

For my project I started learning how to use the knitting machine. My intervention was is it possible using the knitting machine to create a fabric that has a woven structure? To create this I came to the conclusion that I had to use the short row function on the knitting machine. This function gives the ability to knit certain parts of the fabric and to put other parts on hold. Doing this and knitting with only 5 of the 100 needles at a time I was able to create fabric that was made of thin strings of knit. Using another tool made by combining two of the same tools I was able to take off a knitted string and weave it through the already created fabric and put it back on the needles. Doing this in a certain way I could continue knitting. Doing this I answered my question, It is possible to create a woven fabric on the knitting machine! Knowing this was possible I wanted to make a piece of fabric that was 30 by 30 CM. After a couple of tries I succeeded.
Then I started thinking of my final product. I didn't had any idea yet of what I wanted to make so I experimented some more during The concept development process. I had some criteria the product had to fulfill:
I want my project to raise the question of how it is made.
I want it to attract people's attention
I want it to move because it gets your attention even faster
I want it to be three-dimensional because my samples that I found interesting were not just flat pieces of fabric.
The result of This project is a multifunctional product. It can be hung to the ceiling as a room divider, you can hang it above a door to function as a door curtain or in front of a window and it will function as blades. I can see my work hanging in modern households functioning as blades to create beautiful shadows and a cozy feeling in a home.
